Summary

"An International Episode" by Henry James is a tale about two British gentlemen, Lord Lambeth and Percy Beaumont, journeying to America in the 1800s and facing the shock of a brand-new world, told through rich descriptions of American life and the contrast to their English backgrounds. Beginning by introducing the pair as they arrive in New York during the height of summer, the book shows their reaction to the busy, exciting city. Traveling through Broadway, they closely observe the local population and the customs. This over-the-top American lifestyle is outside anything they're used to. They then meet an American named J.L. Westgate, a symbol of the welcoming, yet strange, environment they now find themselves in. As they get used to things, they start thinking about their plans and future interactions as they prepare for new adventures in Newport society, where the tricky parts of social norms and personal relationships heavily influence their experience.
