Summary

"Second Sight" by Basil Wells is a mid-20th century science fiction story that explores themes of identity, relationships, and the impact of technology. The book follows Merle Duggan, a man eager to escape a life he feels trapped in, especially his marriage. After inheriting money, he rents a cutting-edge mechanical body, a "super mech," allowing him to see again after years of blindness. As Merle rediscovers the bright world above Appalachia City, long-buried conflicts with his wife, Janith, surface. The story takes a suspenseful turn when Merle gets caught up in a robbery while using the mech, leading to a dangerous encounter and a surprising discovery about his wife's true feelings. Ultimately, the book is about Merle understanding that true freedom involves looking inward and finding peace with his past and present, leading to a heartfelt reunion with Janith where he finally sees the strength of their connection.
