Summary

Swann's Way by Marcel Proust is a book from the early 1900s, showcasing the modernist style, that investigates ideas about remembering, time passing, and how people experience life and society. The story focuses on Marcel, who narrates the tale as he thinks back on his younger years, his relatives, and his romantic feelings involving the character Swann. It begins with Marcel deeply considering memory and the act of sleeping, including how dreams blend with old memories. He expresses feeling lost as he shifts between what is happening now and clear flashbacks, like his childhood home. Marcel's strong longing for his mother shows the theme of love and missing people, which hints at the complicated relationships that will be further examined as the story continues.
