Summary

"A Traveler from Altruria: Romance" by William Dean Howells is a tale that contrasts societal norms through the eyes of an Altrurian visitor to America. The story begins with an unnamed narrator eagerly awaiting the arrival of this unique traveler, quickly establishing distinct differences between the Altrurian and the more typical American. The Altrurian's gentle and humble nature sparks conversations with the narrator, prompting considerations of American customs centered around service, recreation, and employment expectations. These early interactions display cultural gaps and understandings as the narrator guides the Altrurian, inviting the readers into philosophical exchanges that question the balance between American individualism and the Altrurian emphasis on community and collective duty.
