Summary

"Mercenary" by Mack Reynolds is a science fiction story that follows Joseph Mauser, an experienced mercenary. When Joe arrives to sign up, he sees the less-than-stellar recruits standing in line. He soon clashes with another recruit. Soon after, Joe meets Baron Haer, the leader of the Vacuum Tube Transport, who questions why someone with Joe’s know-how is a low-ranking solider. Throughout the story, the book explores the societal divisions and militarized conflicts of the time, showing the complex reasons behind Joe's decision to fight.

About the Author

Dallas McCord "Mack" Reynolds was an American science fiction writer. His pen names included Dallas Ross, Mark Mallory, Clark Collins, Dallas Rose, Guy McCord, Maxine Reynolds, Bob Belmont, and Todd Harding. His work focused on socioeconomic speculation, usually expressed in thought-provoking explorations of utopian societies from a radical, sometime satiric perspective. He was a popular author from the 1950s to the 1970s, especially with readers of science fiction and fantasy magazines.
