Summary

"Emma" by Jane Austen is a story set in the Regency era about a wealthy and active young woman named Emma Woodhouse who loves to set up her friends in relationships, especially after her governess, Miss Taylor, gets married to Mr. Weston. Now feeling lonely, Emma starts scheming matches, often involving her friend Harriet Smith, who isn't as high up in society. The story starts by showing Emma's cozy life at Hartfield, how she thinks about things, her dad Mr. Woodhouse's personality, and how close she was with Miss Taylor, whose marriage makes Emma feel sad. Right away, we see that Emma is very confident, but her meddling could cause problems, especially as she figures out her feelings for Harriet and a possible match with a young farmer named Robert Martin. The book also highlights how important social class and complicated relationships are, suggesting things will get tricky as Emma’s attempts to help don't go as planned.

About the Author

Jane Austen was an English novelist known primarily for her six novels, which implicitly interpret, critique, and comment upon the English landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Austen's plots often explore the dependence of women on marriage for the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security. Her works are implicit critiques of the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th-century literary realism. Her use of social commentary, realism, wit, and irony have earned her acclaim amongst critics and scholars.
