Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen is an early 1800s story about love and family that shows how different personalities deal with life's challenges. The book focuses on the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, who represent logic and feelings, as they struggle with money problems after their father dies. When their wealthy relative dies, the Dashwood family suddenly finds themselves short on funds, leaving them with less inheritance money than they anticipated. Elinor, usually calm and collected, and Marianne, who is more dramatic and acts on her feelings, have to accept their new situation in life. The reader meets their brother, John Dashwood, who, because of his greedy wife, doesn't keep his promise to his father to take care of his mother and sisters. These beginning chapters highlight show how different the sisters are and tease at the emotional stories to come as they deal with relationships with people like Edward Ferrars and Mr. Willoughby.

Her works are implicit critiques of the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th-century literary realism. Her use of social commentary, realism, wit, and irony have earned her acclaim amongst critics and scholars.
