The book starts by showing Lilly as a young girl, practicing her music and lost in her thoughts, while her mom wants her to chase after success and deals with everyday life. The story gives us a look into Lilly's friendships and rivalries, showing how she fits into her family and foreshadowing the troubles and growth that will come as she tries to make her mark in a world that's not always fair to young women.
