Summary

"A Silent Singer" by Clara Morris is a tale set in the nineteenth century. It follows a young girl who becomes close with Linda Hyler, who is the preacher's daughter. Linda is sick, and she can't do some things she wants to do, because her family is poor and because of her father's feelings. As Linda gets sicker, the story looks at ideas of love, losing someone, and what it was like for people who didn't have much back then. The person telling the story arrives at the Hyler's home and is very tired with an unquenchable desire to discover new parts of the world. She begins to observe the Hyler family and notices that they are struggling. Poverty and unfulfilled dreams shadow the household, especially impacting the reverend. Even though Linda can't talk, the narrator loves her spirit and charm, and their friendship becomes a big part of the story. As the narrator realizes what Linda craves and the troubles she faces, the reader will encounter a world full of both love and sadness and see how their lives are connected.
