The adventurous lady

"The Adventurous Lady" by J. C. Snaith, written in the early 20th century, is a story about two young women from very different backgrounds whose lives become connected through a daring plan. Lady Elfreda Catkin, born into aristocracy, finds herself drawn to Miss Cass, a governess leading a more humble life with dreams of her own. In a bustling train station shortly after the Armistice, Elfreda notices Cass's overwhelmed state and invites her to share her first-class compartment. There, a wild idea blossoms, and Elfreda proposes they switch places, where Cass will experience the luxurious life of a lady, and Elfreda will discover life as a governess. Through this exchange, the narrative examines not only the differences between social classes but themes of personal fulfillment driving social change.

John Collis Snaith was an English first-class cricketer active 1900 who played for Nottinghamshire. He was born in Nottingham; died in Hampstead. He was also a novelist, writing as J. C. Snaith, and played in the Authors Cricket Club alongside fellow authors A. A. Milne and P. G. Wodehouse among others.
