Summary

"The Lady of the Basement Flat" by Mrs. George de Horne Vaizey is a story about two sisters, Evelyn and Kathleen Wastneys, and Evelyn's journey to find herself after Kathleen gets married. Feeling adrift, Evelyn transforms herself into an elderly woman named Miss Harding and moves to a working-class neighborhood in London, where she performs good deeds. Evelyn's family life continues alongside her new adventures, which allows her to form stronger relationships over time. She rents a basement flat while disguised as an old woman to find out who she is and where she belongs in the world. In her new life, she identifies with those around her, and she wants to help them, such as a sick neighbor's child. She is in search of love and is developing as a person while she struggles with social class and personal sacrifice.
