"The Motor Maid" by C. N. (Charles Norris) Williamson and A. M. Williamson is a story set at the start of the 1900's, about a young woman named Lys d'Angely running away from an unwanted marriage as she becomes a lady's maid. The story explores themes of class differences and taking control of one's life, with adventure and comedy intertwined. Lys starts her trip on a train, nervously thinking about her future and soon finds herself mixed into a funny situation with a traveler and her dog. As she makes her way to Cannes, she meets the odd Miss Paget. Lys faces a challenge as she learns of the death of Princess Boriskoff, the woman she was to work for. As she's left with no money and all alone, Lys shows strength and quick-thinking as she deals with her new life. The way she adapts shows us the bigger ideas of change and freedom that develop as the story unfolds.
