Summary

"Mass' George: A Boy's Adventures in the Old Savannah" by George Manville Fenn is a tale set in mid-18th century Georgia about a young boy named George Bruton and his father, Captain Bruton, starting a new life on a plantation after the loss of George's mother. The story follows George as he faces alligators, floods, interactions with Indigenous peoples, and the challenges of plantation life, but at its heart lies the growing friendship between young George and Pomp, a boy enslaved on their plantation, that highlights questions about the morality of their society. Through adventures and conversations, the book explores themes of friendship and right-and-wrong at a time when slavery shaped daily life.
