Summary

"Captivity" by Leonora Eyles is a story set at the start of the 1900's that follows Marcella, a young girl whose life on a remote farm is filled with the weight of her family's past and the troubles within her home. The novel looks at feeling alone, the conflict between what the body wants and our inner selves, and how family demands can impact our personal wishes. Marcella finds comfort in the land, its stories, and her friendship with Hunchback Wullie, while dealing with the starkness of her surroundings and thinking about her family's history using folklore and mysticism. As she faces her complicated world and the tense relationship with her father, Andrew, who is battling his own inner problems, the scene is set for her to discover who she is and break free from the burdens put on her by her family and father.
