Summary

"The Captives" by Hugh Walpole is a story about a young woman named Maggie Cardinal, who is dealing with the passing of her stingy father and her difficult family relationships. The novel explores Maggie's feelings of being alone, her journey to find herself, and her desire to find a place where she truly belongs. Maggie's life is turned upside down by her father's death, forcing her to face her memories and mixed emotions about him. As the villagers gather for the funeral, Maggie realizes she didn't really love her father, leading to feelings of loneliness but also relief. She interacts with her Uncle Mathew, who wants her attention, but Maggie yearns for independence and connection with her aunts, who represent a fresh start. As Maggie prepares to leave her childhood home for London, she is filled with both hope and worry about the future.

About the Author

Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole, CBE was an English novelist. He was the son of an Anglican clergyman, intended for a career in the church but drawn instead to writing. Among those who encouraged him were the authors Henry James and Arnold Bennett. His skill at scene-setting and vivid plots, as well as his high profile as a lecturer, brought him a large readership in the United Kingdom and North America. He was a best-selling author in the 1920s and 1930s but has been largely neglected since his death.
