Summary

"The Educational Writings of Richard Mulcaster" by Richard Mulcaster is a compilation of educational writings from the late 1500s arguing for a new vision of teaching. Drawing on Mulcaster's two decades of teaching experience, the work promotes the idea that good education should develop a child’s body as well as their mind. He examined and questioned commonly held beliefs about how to teach, what age children should start learning, how important exercise is with school lessons, and how much parents should be involved. He wanted to improve education methods in order to grow young minds in a wholesome way.

About the Author

Richard Mulcaster is known best for his headmasterships of Merchant Taylors' School and St Paul's School, both then in London, and for his pedagogic writings. He is often regarded as the founder of English language lexicography. He was also an Anglican priest.
