Summerfield or, Life on a Farm

"Summerfield" by Day Kellogg Lee is a story set in the 1800s about a young man, Matthew Fabens, who travels from his home on the Hudson River to the wild lands of western New York's Lake Country to start a new life. Supported by his Uncle Walter, he wants to leave his comfortable life to explore the wilderness, promising both adventure and challenges. His parents agree despite being sad, and offer advice and affection as he begins his trip. The story shows the difficult feelings of saying goodbye to familiar faces, hinting at the life-changing times ahead as he joins settlers in the wild, facing the thrill of new beginnings and the sadness of leaving his loved ones behind.
