Summary

"Avoidance Situation" by James V. McConnell is a science fiction story set in a universe where humanity's survival hangs precariously in the balance. Aboard the spaceship "Sunward", Captain Allen Hawkins and his crew stumble upon a habitable planet, an encounter that quickly turns sour when an alien messenger delivers a chilling ultimatum from the Dakn Empire: surrender or face total destruction. Caught between the seemingly impossible choices of submission or obliteration, Captain Hawkins struggles with the heavy burden of his decision, wrestling with the moral weight of his crew's lives and the future of mankind. As the "Sunward" prepares for potential annihilation, each member grapples with their emotions, testing their resolve and courage. In the climax, Captain Hawkins gambles everything on a daring escape plan that may or may not save his crew, and will ultimately determine humanity's future.
