Summary

"Harold: the Last of the Saxon Kings — Volume 11" by Lytton is a historical novel that captures the crucial moments surrounding King Harold II's reign in England just before the Norman Conquest. As King Edward the Confessor nears his last breath, powerful nobles vie for control, especially Harold, who seeks the throne, and Duke William of Normandy, who desires it as well. The story starts in a palace filled with tension, where people anxiously await news of the dying king and contemplate who will take over. The King's lady, Edith, church leaders, and Harold himself are all present as Edward's health worsens. There is deep worry not only about Edward's death but also about whether Harold's claim to the throne is valid, given William's strong desires. As Edward passes, he seems to support Harold as the next king, setting the scene for political schemes and betrayals. The novel quickly sets up themes of power, allegiance, and approaching war, building a strong base for the historical drama that runs throughout the narrative.
