Summary

"Old Mortality" by Sir Walter Scott is a historical novel that transports readers to 17th-century Scotland, chronicling the tumultuous era of the Covenanters. The story centers on a grave-digger, known as Old Mortality, who travels the countryside to preserve the memory of Covenanter martyrs. The tale begins with the narrator, a schoolmaster named Jedediah Cleishbotham, recounting his meeting with Old Mortality and detailing his mission to honor the fallen. The narrative explores Old Mortality's life, his reverence for the deceased, and his contempt for those who dishonor their memory. The tone carefully blends profound historical empathy with an examination of intense religious passion. The opening of the story establishes the foundation for a deep examination of conflict, remembrance, and the pursuit of religious liberty.
