Summary

"Marius the Epicurean — Volume 2" by Walter Pater is a novel set in ancient Rome that dives into the mind of Marius as he journeys through philosophical thought and self-discovery. The story picks up with Marius profoundly moved by a Stoic philosopher's insights on morality during a public discussion. This encounter sparks a period of intense reflection for Marius, causing him to question his Epicurean beliefs and how they align with the morals of his society. He struggles to connect his love for beauty with the ethical demands around him, kicking off an internal quest to bring his personal philosophy with the greater moral values of his era.

About the Author

Walter Horatio Pater was an English essayist, art and literary critic, and fiction writer, regarded as one of the great stylists. His first and most often reprinted book, Studies in the History of the Renaissance (1873), revised as The Renaissance: Studies in Art and Poetry (1877), in which he outlined his approach to art and advocated an ideal of the intense inner life, was taken by many as a manifesto of Aestheticism.
