"From Snotty to Sub" by Wolston B. C. W. Forester is a story from the early 1900's about young British navy officers and their experiences in World War I. The story follows a Midshipman as he grows up and becomes a Sub-Lieutenant. The book shows what life was like in the navy, the friendships people made, and the scary events that happened. It also gives you a look into the lives of young men who had to fight in a tough war. Right at the start, the author tells you it was hard to write about the Midshipman's journey because of the rules during the war about keeping a diary. The first set of pages talks about when our main character becomes part of H.M.S. "C——", a super-powerful ship, and how he adjusts to living there. He also meets other Midshipmen and gets used to the daily routines. One of the most important early days is when something awful happens at a picnic, and a fellow officer passes away. This event shows that in the military, people can feel both happy and sad at the same time. The beginning prepares you for a story about someone growing up while war is all around him.
