Summary

"Unbeaten Tracks in Japan" by Isabella L. Bird is a travelogue that chronicles the author's solo explorations through Japan's remote areas in the 1800s. The story opens with her ship arriving at Yokohama, Japan, after her long trip by sea. She marvels at the country with its iconic Mount Fuji, and the many fishing boats. The narrative focuses on her encounters with the environment and people and gives details on everything from transportation, like sampans and jinrikishas, to local customs and traditions. As a Western woman venturing alone into a new environment, Bird offers a unique perspective on Japanese culture. The book portrays both the wonders and difficulties she encountered when exploring a civilization so unlike her own.
