Summary

"The Last American" by John Ames Mitchell is a satirical science fiction story where a Persian prince named Khan-li leads an expedition to what was once America, now a ruin in the distant future of 2951. Traveling aboard the Zlotuhb, Khan-li and his crew explore the remains of Nhu-Yok, once known as New York, and uncover strange artifacts that reveal the materialistic and culturally unoriginal lives of the long-gone Mehrikan civilization. With the insights of Nofuhl, the crew's historian, the story becomes a sharp critique of a society obsessed with wealth and consumerism, which ultimately led to its downfall. This exploration reaches a fever pitch when they stumble upon the final survivor of the civilization, an encounter that ends in tragedy and brings about deep thought on the errors of civilizations.
