Summary

"California Sketches, New Series" by O. P. Fitzgerald, is a set of accounts that show what life was like in California in the past. The author tells stories about people and places from a time when California was still being settled. He thinks about what it means to be human, talks about problems in society, and shares things that happened to him. At the beginning, the book seems to remember how things used to be in California. The person telling the story remembers people he knew when he was young and thinks about how hard but also how good life was as the state was growing. The first stories are about people like a schoolteacher and a special turkey, and they also comment on how families work and how people deal with problems. Fitzgerald uses strong words and careful observations to make the people of California come alive, showing how they were all connected to the spirit of the frontier.
