Summary

"Holiday House: A Series of Tales" by Catherine Sinclair is a collection of stories about the Graham children, Harry and Laura, as they experience life in nineteenth century England. Following the loss of their mother, the siblings, along with their older brother Frank, live with, and are looked after by, their father, Sir Edward Graham, among other family members. Frank is a good brother, but Harry and Laura are wild and, at times, difficult to handle as their mischievous behavior keeps their governess, Mrs. Crabtree on her toes. As the children get into trouble by cutting each other's hair, or having accidents that cause fires, each story highlights the contrast between imagination and moral instruction, making it a lighthearted journey with important life lessons.

About the Author

Catherine Sinclair was a Scottish novelist and children's writer, who departed from the moralising approach common in that period. She is credited with discovering that the author of the initially anonymous Waverley Novels was Sir Walter Scott.
