Summary

"Oswald Bastable and Others" by E. Nesbit is a series of tales that take place in the 1800s, and it chronicles the escapades of Oswald Bastable and his brothers and sisters as they explore their surroundings and get into trouble. With childhood wonder, the ties of family, and difficult choices being key features, the book will likely appeal to those who enjoy lighthearted tales of childhood. We first meet Oswald and his siblings as they move from Lewisham to Blackheath to live with their uncle from India; once there, the children receive Christmas presents, among them an amazing printing press that inspires them. As Oswald and his brother Dicky embark on their adventures, they accidentally cause a worker to fall off a ladder, which leads to feelings of guilt and attempts to collect money for the injured man. This opening sequence, which combines humor and naivete, promises readers an exciting journey full of unique challenges and youthful adventures.
