Summary

"Harding's Luck" by E. Nesbit is a story focusing on Dickie Harding, a young, disabled boy living with a cruel aunt, who desires a life of adventure. The story centers around Dickie's strong wish for love and a place to belong, as he deals with misfortune and small moments of happiness. This is showcased through his attachment to his toy, Tinkler, and his interactions with a nice neighbor and the questionable Mr. Beale. The beginning of the novel shows Dickie's difficult life and background. This includes when he loses his rabbit hutch, which emphasizes his loneliness and how his aunt treats him. As he encounters a stimulating neighbor and thinks about his greatest wishes, Dickie becomes determined to sell moonflowers to get back his beloved toy. The chapter highlights the difficulties and triumphs of childhood as it begins Dickie's journey of self-discovery and adventure in a world that often seems unkind.
