Summary

"Songs of Love and Empire" by E. Nesbit is a collection of poems from the late 1800s that shows what it felt like to be in love with your country and royalty during the British Empire. The verses share feelings of love, loyalty to the crown, and what it meant to be British at that time. The poem at the beginning is all about Queen Victoria, praising her rule and the Empire in a happy, national celebration of the Queen. The speaker creates pictures of greatness and longing for the old days, explaining how the royal family and the love of the people are connected. The poems then build a link between the great people and times of British history with the good things happening now with the Queen. This makes the reader feel proud and loving toward the royal family.
