Summary

"Accidents of an Antiquary’s Life" by D. G. (David George) Hogarth is a memoir that follows the author's transformation from someone uninterested in antiquities to an experienced antiquarian in the early 1900s. The story recounts Hogarth’s archaeological explorations in Asia Minor and Greece, sharing his journey of discovery and growth under the tutelage of William Martin Ramsay. The narrative opens with Hogarth admitting his early disinterest in the field, and shows his growing fascination as he confronted the challenges and reveals the allure of historical sites. His initial fumbling attempts, like awkward excavation and gradual learning, are made vivid as the narrative highlights the interplay of past and present.
