Summary

"The Diary of Samuel Pepys — Complete" by Samuel Pepys is a historical journal covering 1659 to 1669, which gives an up-close view of life during a changing time in England, especially after Charles II took the throne. The diary tells about Pepys’ own life, his job managing naval affairs, and big events happening around him, so we see both everyday moments and important historical happenings. In the beginning, Pepys is living in Axe Yard with his wife and a servant at the end of 1659, dealing with daily routines while also keeping an eye on political issues and people like Lord Lambert who were making things uncertain. He mentions his wife's hopes for a baby and shares his thoughts on politics and his experiences, setting the stage for a mix of personal stories and social commentary, which makes the diary interesting.

About the Author

Samuel Pepys was an English diarist and naval administrator. He served as administrator of the Royal Navy and Member of Parliament, but is most remembered today for the diary he kept for almost a decade. Though he had no maritime experience, Pepys rose to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under both King Charles II and King James II through patronage, diligence, and his talent for administration. His influence and reforms at the Admiralty were important in the early professionalisation of the Royal Navy.
