Summary

** "Diary of Samuel Pepys — Volume 39: October 1665" by Samuel Pepys is a diary that gives readers a peek into the daily life of a 17th-century English naval administrator during a difficult time. Set against the backdrop of war with the Dutch and a terrible plague in London, the diary entries of October 1665 show Pepys dealing with worries about the navy, talking with important people, and observing everyday life. He writes about everything from managing naval supplies and dealing with captured goods to personal relationships, parties, and the fear caused by sickness and social problems; the book paints a vivid picture of what it was like to live through this period of history. **

About the Author

Samuel Pepys was an English diarist and naval administrator. He served as administrator of the Royal Navy and Member of Parliament, but is most remembered today for the diary he kept for almost a decade. Though he had no maritime experience, Pepys rose to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under both King Charles II and King James II through patronage, diligence, and his talent for administration. His influence and reforms at the Admiralty were important in the early professionalisation of the Royal Navy.
