Summary

"Diary of Samuel Pepys — Volume 37: August 1665" by Samuel Pepys is a gripping firsthand recollection from a 17th-century naval official navigating life in London during the height of the Great Plague. It recounts daily routines, from social visits and financial successes to the growing dread caused by the overwhelming presence of death and disease. Pepys shares his personal experiences and reactions to the plague and paints a picture of a society in crisis, blending observations of ordinary life with the grim reality of widespread mortality, causing him to contemplate life's fleeting nature and prepare for the worst while balancing personal achievements with looming dread.

About the Author

Samuel Pepys was an English diarist and naval administrator. He served as administrator of the Royal Navy and Member of Parliament, but is most remembered today for the diary he kept for almost a decade. Though he had no maritime experience, Pepys rose to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under both King Charles II and King James II through patronage, diligence, and his talent for administration. His influence and reforms at the Admiralty were important in the early professionalisation of the Royal Navy.
