Discipline

"Discipline" by Mary Brunton is a story about transformation, following the journey of Ellen Percy, a privileged and stubborn girl, through the trials of growing up and finding her place in the world. The novel opens by presenting Ellen's reflections on her pampered youth and the delicate--yet ultimately unhelpful--bond she shared with her mother. Right away, we see Ellen's self-centered attitude and rebellious nature that lead to disagreements with those in charge, especially her father and, as the story unfolds, her classmates. Through her experiences at school and the gradual realization of how her mother shaped her upbringing, Ellen starts to change. The reader can see how Ellen is learning that genuine progress means facing tough situations that demand real discipline and a close look at herself.
