Summary

"Abraham Lincoln: Was He a Christian?" by John E. (John Eleazer) Remsburg is a late 1800s deep-dive into the religious views of Abraham Lincoln. It challenges the commonly held idea that one of the most respected U.S. presidents was actually a Christian. The book digs into different stories and proof about Lincoln's faith from people who knew him and from his life stories, trying to prove he didn't follow Christian beliefs. It questions if what people think is true about Lincoln lines up with the facts, bringing up clashing stories and highlighting the need for honest historical info. It talks about Lincoln's tricky feelings about religion, suggesting he may have been more into logical thinking or a belief in a creator, rather than traditional Christian faith, and that understanding this would actually make his story even more impressive.

About the Author

John Eleazer Remsburg was an ardent religious skeptic in America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In his book 1909 book The Christ, Remsburg lists forty-two ancient writers who did not mention Jesus or whose mentions are suspect, and this list has appeared in many subsequent books that question the historicity of Jesus. Remsburg himself wrote that the man Jesus may have existed, but that the Christ of the gospels is mythical.
