Summary

"The Christian Sabbath: Is It of Divine Origin?" by John E. Remsburg is a late 1800's theological argument, challenging the idea that Sunday is a divinely appointed holy day for Christians. It suggests that Sunday worship comes from older, non-Christian customs. The book carefully reviews Bible verses and writings from important religious people like St. Paul and early church leaders. Remsburg uses these sources to claim that Christian teachings don't actually require anyone to treat a specific day as a day of rest. He tries to show how the idea of changing the holy day from the Jewish Sabbath to Sunday was based on misunderstandings, urging people to rethink the importance of Sabbath traditions based on historical proof.

About the Author

John Eleazer Remsburg was an ardent religious skeptic in America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In his book 1909 book The Christ, Remsburg lists forty-two ancient writers who did not mention Jesus or whose mentions are suspect, and this list has appeared in many subsequent books that question the historicity of Jesus. Remsburg himself wrote that the man Jesus may have existed, but that the Christ of the gospels is mythical.
