"The Faces Outside" by Bruce McAllister is a science fiction story about two humans living in a tank of alien experiments. Subjected to mutations, a male and female, are stripped of their independent thought, and are under constant observation by alien entities called 'Faces'. Despite their robotic-like existence, the pair develops a deep connection and longs for a family, which is complicated by their captivity. The theme of reproduction and the desire for freedom becomes their driving force, setting them on a journey for freedom and giving meaning to their existence under the watchful gaze of their captors.
