Summary

"Friend Island" by Francis Stevens is an early 20th-century adventure where a shipwrecked woman's strength shines as she confronts solitude and unexpected companionship on a remote island. After the "Shouter" explodes, our heroine finds refuge on a deserted paradise, naming it Anita and relishing its tranquility until Nelson Smith, a fellow castaway, arrives, disrupting her peace. Their contrasting personalities clash as they plan their escape, culminating in a volcanic eruption triggered by his inconsiderate actions. Through this ordeal, the sea-woman discovers that genuine connection requires mutual respect, leading her to choose self-respect and her bond with the island over Nelson's companionship.
