"The Island: Or, An Adventure of a Person of Quality" by Richard Whiteing is a late 19th-century story about a man who abandons his unsatisfying life in London and winds up on a deserted island in the Pacific. After a journey across Europe, our protagonist is shipwrecked and meets Victoria, a native woman, with whom he explores life away from civilization. Together, they challenge the constructs of society and begin a journey of connection, culture, and human nature, as they wrestle with the true meaning of their lives in their secluded paradise.

Richard Whiteing was an English author and journalist.
