Summary

"The Quest of the Historical Jesus" by Albert Schweitzer is a deep dive into how scholars have tried to understand the real, historical Jesus over time. It looks at different thinkers, from Reimarus to Wrede, and how they wrestled with the question. The book shows how hard it is to make sense of Jesus's life when you compare the stories in the Gospels to modern historical analysis. It's like a journey through the different ways people have approached Jesus, noting the tension between old Christian beliefs and new, more logical ways of thinking. Schweitzer argues that to really understand Jesus, we need to understand the world he lived in, setting the scene to examine how ideas about Jesus changed, and pointing out who helped shape the search for the historical Jesus.

About the Author

Ludwig Philipp Albert Schweitzer was a German-born French polymath from Alsace. He was a theologian, organist, musicologist, writer, humanitarian, philosopher, and physician. As a Lutheran minister, Schweitzer challenged both the secular view of the historical Jesus as depicted by the historical-critical method current at this time, as well as the traditional Christian view. His contributions to the interpretation of Pauline Christianity concern the role of Paul's mysticism of "being in Christ" as primary and the doctrine of justification by faith as secondary.
