Summary

** "On the Edge of the Primeval Forest" by Albert Schweitzer is a memoir that recounts a doctor's adventures and insights while working in Equatorial Africa during the early 1900s. This story describes Schweitzer's shift from teaching to becoming a doctor, driven by a powerful need to help the people living along the Ogowe River who were sick and struggling. The book starts by explaining why Schweitzer chose to become a doctor in Africa, inspired by his strong beliefs about helping people he had learned were suffering. He talks about leaving his old life as a scholar and musician, getting ready for his trip, and arriving in Lambarene to start his mission. The story shows how complicated life was there because of the culture and the many health problems the local people faced, along with the challenge of setting up a clinic with very little supplies; through it all, Schweitzer creates a narrative of care and commitment in the midst of colonial Africa. **

About the Author

Ludwig Philipp Albert Schweitzer was a German-born French polymath from Alsace. He was a theologian, organist, musicologist, writer, humanitarian, philosopher, and physician. As a Lutheran minister, Schweitzer challenged both the secular view of the historical Jesus as depicted by the historical-critical method current at this time, as well as the traditional Christian view. His contributions to the interpretation of Pauline Christianity concern the role of Paul's mysticism of "being in Christ" as primary and the doctrine of justification by faith as secondary.
