Summary

"The Nigger of the 'Narcissus': A Tale of the Forecastle" by Joseph Conrad is a late 19th-century novel that explores ideas about race and relationships on a British ship. The story centers on James Wait, a black sailor who stirs up different feelings in the mostly white crew. As the story goes on, it looks at the crew's thoughts and feelings, dealing with big topics like what it means to be human, who people are, and feeling alone. The book starts with the ship, Narcissus, getting ready to leave, and the crew is busy with new people arriving. James Wait shows up late, and the other sailors are curious and worried about him. They have to deal with their biases and the way things work on the ship. Wait's skin color and sickness become important points of tension, which leads to conflicts and interactions. As the crew faces tough times at sea, their ideas about Wait change, which sets the stage for a deep look at how people relate to each other when they're stuck in a small space.

About the Author

Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British novelist and story writer. He is regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language and although he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he became a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. He wrote novels and stories, many in nautical settings that depict crises of human individuality in the midst of what he saw as an indifferent, inscrutable and amoral world.
