Summary

"Our Nig; Or, Sketches from the Life of a Free Black" by Harriet E. Wilson is a powerful story about Frado, a young biracial girl called "Nig," and her mother, Mag Smith, as they navigate a world filled with prejudice in the 1800's. As the story begins, the spotlight shines on Mag and her internal battle with grief. As Mag struggles to find her way through a lonely world, Frado is soon trapped in servitude in a white family's home. As Frado grows, the narrative paints a vivid picture of Frado's journey and feelings as she confronts the emotional and physical burdens left by slavery; cruel mistreatment at the hands of her neglectful mistress; and the little acts of kindness she encounters.
