Summary

"The Miser" by Molière is a play from the late 1600s that explores how greed can ruin family ties. It mainly follows Harpagon, whose intense love for money causes problems with his kids, Cléante and ÉLIse, and also with his own love life. They have a hard time dealing with his stinginess, which creates stress between what they want and what their father wants for them. The play starts by showing Valère and ÉLIse talking about their secret love and worrying about what her father will think and then introduces Cléante talking about his love for Marianne, but Harpagon is planning to marry Marianne himself. As the story progresses, Harpagon's extreme focus on money and power becomes clear as he makes marriage plans that ignore what his children want. The start builds a funny fight between love and greed, showing that Harpagon sees his kids as competition instead of equals. Using smart and funny conversations, Molière makes fun of what society thinks about money, love, and family duties.

About the Author

Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known by his stage name Molière, was a French playwright, actor, and poet, widely regarded as one of the great writers in the French language and world literature. His extant works include comedies, farces, tragicomedies, comédie-ballets, and more. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed at the Comédie-Française more often than those of any other playwright today. His influence is such that the French language is often referred to as the "language of Molière".
