Summary

"Augustus Does His Bit: A True-to-Life Farce" by Bernard Shaw is a funny play set during World War I that makes fun of the British government and the misplaced loyalty of its rich leaders. The story follows Lord Augustus Highcastle, a kind but not very capable official. The play looks at ideas like doing your part, giving up things, and the problems that happen when there's a war. It takes place in the Town Hall of Little Pifflington, where Lord Augustus wants to get people to support the war. He talks to Beamish, a clumsy clerk who is annoyed by the government's problems. Things get more interesting when a beautiful woman shows up pretending to be a spy, trying to steal important military information from Augustus. With clever talk and silly situations, the play shows how different the upper class is from regular people during the war, and it reveals how absurd the leaders of the nation can be.

About the Author

George Bernard Shaw, known at his insistence as Bernard Shaw, was an Irish playwright, critic, polemicist and political activist. His influence on Western theatre, culture and politics extended from the 1880s to his death and beyond. He wrote more than sixty plays, including major works such as Man and Superman (1902), Pygmalion (1913) and Saint Joan (1923). With a range incorporating both contemporary satire and historical allegory, Shaw became the leading dramatist of his generation, and in 1925 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
