Summary

"Androcles and the Lion" by Bernard Shaw is a play set in ancient Roman times. It tells the story of Androcles, a Christian man, and his run-in with a lion. The story kicks off with Androcles and his wife, Megæra, traveling through a tough jungle, setting a tone that's both funny and a little sad. The play centers around Androcles and the hurt animal. Androcles' wife has a bad attitude. When Androcles finds a lion with a thorn stuck in its paw, it shows how kind he is. The play explores big ideas like believing in something, being kind, and how silly it is when people are mean to others for no good reason, all wrapped up in a funny story.

About the Author

George Bernard Shaw, known at his insistence as Bernard Shaw, was an Irish playwright, critic, polemicist and political activist. His influence on Western theatre, culture and politics extended from the 1880s to his death and beyond. He wrote more than sixty plays, including major works such as Man and Superman (1902), Pygmalion (1913) and Saint Joan (1923). With a range incorporating both contemporary satire and historical allegory, Shaw became the leading dramatist of his generation, and in 1925 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
