She weaves her way into the lives of William Mainwaring, a man chasing after success, and his wife Susan, causing trouble with her sneaky actions. The story starts by looking back at Lucretia's life after the death of Dalibard, showing how she deals with being a widow. When she visits the Mainwarings, she seems friendly, but she's really trying to control William's dreams while making things hard for him and Susan. The beginning of the book shows Lucretia as someone who plans ahead and uses people, especially William, leading him into risky business deals that ruin him. It's a tale full of big dreams, revenge, and doing wrong, as Lucretia tries to take back control and find her place in a world that hasn't been kind to her.
