"Captain Scraggs; Or, The Green-Pea Pirates" by Peter B. Kyne is a funny story about Captain Phineas P. Scraggs, a grumpy but clever captain of a run-down steamship called the "Maggie", and his wacky relationship with his first mate, Mr. Gibney, and his head engineer, Mr. McGuffey. The story takes place around the San Francisco bay and is full of sea-faring mishaps, strange characters, and funny confusions. Right away, we see the tense relationship between Captain Scraggs and Mr. Gibney as they deal with a heavy fog. Their arguments show how tough it is to run the "Maggie" and how awkward Scraggs is as a leader, since he tries to be in charge but Gibney confidently pushes back. Even though they argue, the reader gets to know the flawed but likable crew and how they depend on each other. The story is funny because Scraggs is worried he will lose his ship and money. The crew's crazy chatter hints at the odd adventures they will face as they navigate real and imagined problems on their journey.
