Summary

"Pig-Headed" Sailor Men by Louis Becke is a compilation of sea stories that focuses on the arrogance and lack of skill seen in ship captains in the early 1900s. The book tells of the author's time sailing and especially his run-ins with stubborn and unskilled captains. He shares accounts of his voyage on the "Rimitara," commanded by the able but arrogant Captain Rosser and other adventures. The stories include captains ignoring good advice, leading to dangerous situations, like groundings and shipwrecks; and illustrates the outcomes of sailors’ pride and stubbornness, capturing the unpredictable nature of life at sea.

About the Author

George Lewis Becke was at the turn of the nineteenth century, the most prolific, significant, and internationally renowned Australian-born writer of the South Pacific region. Having lived and worked among Pacific Islands and Islanders as a trader, ship's supercargo, and villager for some two decades, learning languages and observing natural and cultural life, Becke was prompted by J F Archibald of The Bulletin to write down his experiences, eventually becoming a popular and respected author of short stories, novellas, novels, as well as historic and ethnographic works.
