Summary

"Concerning 'Bully' Hayes" by Louis Becke is a recounting of the life of Captain William Henry Hayes, a well-known and complicated person in the Pacific in the 1860s and 1870s. It shows his questionable but common practices in trading and getting people to work for him. The book paints a clear picture of the lively world of the South Seas at the time. The story gives the different sides of Bully Hayes, showing both how charming and reckless he was as he dealt with traders and the people who lived on the islands. Through stories that grab your attention and show personal experiences, the writer recalls Hayes's travels all over the Pacific, his work in the labor trade, and how he got a bad reputation for acting like a pirate. The life of Hayes, full of dangers and adventures, gives an understanding of the forces at work involving power, culture, and just trying to survive in the Pacific.

About the Author

George Lewis Becke was at the turn of the nineteenth century, the most prolific, significant, and internationally renowned Australian-born writer of the South Pacific region. Having lived and worked among Pacific Islands and Islanders as a trader, ship's supercargo, and villager for some two decades, learning languages and observing natural and cultural life, Becke was prompted by J F Archibald of The Bulletin to write down his experiences, eventually becoming a popular and respected author of short stories, novellas, novels, as well as historic and ethnographic works.
